Organic Production Lecture held in Bagrdan

In the library in Bagrdan on 14th October 2010, a lecture on Organic Production was held. Оn that occasion Bojana Dimitrijevic, Deputy Chairman of the Assembly of the Town of Jagodina officially declared the renovated library open for the residents of Bagrdan. Services of the Network for Rural Development were presented by Snezana Jevtic, an agronomist. The services of the Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises and Registered Households were presented by Nevenka Petronijevic. Conveniences that farmers can have were presented, and special attention was paid to the conveniences about Organic production and terms of getting subsidies of 25,000 dinars per hectare. The Ministry of Agriculture prepared the National Action Plan which will give instructions for the development of the organic production for the next 5 years. For the past couple of years, organic production has been subsidized more intensively in order to provide a status of a third-world country of Serbia in the EU, so ways of business of producers from Serbia are equal to those in the EU.

Ana Pantic-Ilic, a chemist spoke about challenges and possibilities of organic production. She introduced the nutritional value of organic food and its advantages over the food produced in a conventional way. Serbia has good potentials for organic production, 80% of the territory meets the strict terms that certification bodies propose. On of the conditions that could be a potential drawback is a transitional period from conventional to organic production. Number of producers engaged in this field in Serbia is small for now, but it is growing. Ana introduced the allowed preparations which can be used for protection and nutrition of plants, and reminded the producers of some forgotten means like cooper sulfate. A video material with producers’ experiences, especially of producers from Selenca, who achieved remarkable results in production of organic food, was shown. At the end of her lecture, Ana talked about the law that regulates that field of production.
